Sometimes it feels slightly corny when yoga instructors end the class with Namaste. This was a gut feeling, so i had to find the truth behind it so i could end my internal contradicion. The reasons i found for the purpose of my gut feeling is as follows.

Many students, including myself at one time did not understand the concept behind the word, thus are hesitant in saying it with confidence, and instead mumble the word which can be awkward and meaningless. Some teachers don't say anything spiritual and then end the class with Namaste, leaving beginners wondering. Teachers, like all people, have a routines they have learned and might assume all the students know. Routines are awesome, as long as we are careful not to forget the meaning of the act. I knew this Namaste concept was important, so it was critical to get this concept into my whole practice instead of just at the end. Then, my teacher Reegan sealed my conclusion by explaining that it is the conditioning of many American Yoga Classes to just say Namaste at the end.

Mission accomplished, my silly gut feeling is gone.

The way I understand Namaste is:

The Universal Spirit is always present in you and in me. Our Human Spirit enthusiastically and naturally carries this universal energy.

or more simply put

The God in me honors the God in You.

In conclusion, to consistently have a great yoga practice we all must be attentive of Namaste at the beginning of our practice and carrying it throughout the practice and each day. Not only at the end.

A Letter to a Man I love

Here is a Letter I wrote to my Coach, Matthew Ferry.

I've always known, since being a kid, that I will always be happy and am going to be very successful. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized something was dramatically wrong. I hadn't a clearly defined vision of success, and I wasn't certain of the true source of happiness.

I don't know how your coaching would have worked for me two years ago at the beginning stage of my turn around, when I was struggling to rid the hell out of me, to flush out the flawed beliefs and behaviors i had developed over the years that were poured into me from society and other influences bypassing my logical mind straight to my sub-conscious mind.. Because personal re-development is a long process that takes commitment, im guessing that if you were my coach back then it would have been the same slow, gradual process as it was for the last three years while I was into: tony robbins, dianna kokoska, joseph murphy, echkart tolle, dan millmann, anyone who is tops. However since i had that foundation I can say that your coaching combined with practicing dharma yoga and tantra has taken me to the next level.

The yoga provided the breath, which I found to be a main component of the direct bridge from knowledge to personal power.

What I do know is that you were exactly right when you said a few months ago"Please do not do all of your homework!! Don't freak out if you miss one of my coaching nuggets", this was revolutionary in getting me to transition from absorbing information to actually being and knowing myself instead of worrying about what I missed or didn't do. and It is true Because there comes a point (finally, right?) when this way of life is innate and that my personal spirit takes me straight to my objective all of the time so theres no need for anything but bliss.

The key to bliss for me, is having standards and principles and breathing those values into my chakras or energy engines, throughout the day. The above description is my definition of Affirmations. Two years ago, affirmations were merely a starting point of helping my subconscious create better beliefs. Creating internal definitions is key. They are basically scripts that support and run myself.

I found that during natural mood swings, it is important to review my values by reading my journal, or maybe to focus on nothing at all, but especially stay away from negative influences during downtime because this is when the Drunk Monkey really can be swinging to get us.

I didn't realize what it meant to be spiritual until recently : For where I am, it was a compilation of basic terms.
1. Full amazement of the BODY. when I get bored or distracted, i just get into any position that feels good and have conscious body awareness. As one would admire a flower or a mountain, admire your body.
2. using the MIND like it is meant to be used. to get clear, to visualize.
3. having values that consistently deliver the best EMOTIONS. values, i believe, are a main source of bliss. Integrity, Simplicity, self-respect are some of my values.

Now , the Most important part of my journey to spirit was Breath. Take these three elements from above and add consistent deep BREATHING and what I get is Spirit. Spirit is joyous, Spirit can not be stopped, Spirit creates consistent pleasure that are orgasmic. Spirit lets you say No with confidence, and yes with excitement. Spirit takes man to his objective while enjoying the process.

I know this can not be grasped fully until you feel it. Then it can't be absent.

Ps. Can you imagine if Dagny Taggart had full knowledge of the Chakras? Maybe she did not need it. She probably had it already:)

I dislocated my shoulder last month. Bummer, Right?

Wrong.

It made me realize that over time I had slowly steered away from my goals which i set several months ago when I chose to continue growing in the four areas in my life that are most important; Work, Nutrition & Fitness, Mindset, Friends and Family.

My body let me know that I was getting off track by pulling my arm out while surfing.

It was all Clear now. My workouts weren't as intense as i had planned them to be. At some point they stopped getting incrementally tougher every week. Even though that was what I set out to do in order to increase my physical ability. Soon enough i know I will have the instinct to stay on course before I get off.

The common mistake that keeps most people (and myself so far) from reaching their true potential is starting to ease up once you have gotten to be 'good' at something. For me, I was good at these areas of my life relative to what I saw going on in the world. My health was good compared to average. My work was good compared to average. My Mindset and behavior was also above average. And hey, I Have Friends and Family who i spent time with.. I thought that was good too.

I became satisfied with being good when what I was initially striving for was to be great. The injury was how my body said 'Hey Dummy, slow down and keep these critical and exciting areas of your life as your main focus'

Multi-Tasking doesn't exist. But the ability to let emotion go (don't get distracted) in the middle of a focused activity does...It is important to have awareness for how we are spending our time and to be committed in whatever you are doing at the present time. Everything you do is just as important as anything else in your day, lets act like it.

So I've ramped up the intensity.

Healing

Dislocated my left shoulder while longboarding chest high waves in del mar in the middle of September. In the back of my mind i was remembering how after the second dislocation three years prior, I wasn't able to surf for several months. But I knew that this time, my body and mind were in better shape than during the second dislocation.

I had become more into yoga since then so my body felt more in unity than before. The key to a quick recovery was really knowing inside that I was going to heal quick and I also needed to set a measurable goal.

The one thing I knew was that I needed to be back in the water surfing as soon as possible..

When people were showing sympathy or saying THAT SUCKS, I would reply

'It's Fine. I will be back out there in a couple weeks.'

So I chose that as my goal , because with a body in surfing condition, I knew i could do other things I loved too.

Or they would ask, ' are you getting surgery this time?'

'No, I don't need surgery'

I conditioned my mind to believe that the shoulder was healing even at times it pulsed with pain I just used logic to assume the first week would be the toughest. I accompanied my mindset with appropriate action. Obviously to ice it, but more important to move it around and use it functionally, always to the point of mild pain or discomfort. And then for long term healing is to soon get back into PT, this time learning from a combination of sports therapists and yogis.

17 days after the injury, I was back in the water. The first day paddling, i experienced the mild discomfort...At the time i was a little discouraged at that, but now looking back I realize that pain is a powerful healing agent and gives you proper advice. It is important to realize pain as a positive experience and not mistake physical pain for anything else.

As long as you don't let the physical pain turn into mental suffering, you will be healed in no time.

On the 19th day, I surfed an empty line up with shoulder high glassy waves at luscombs in Point Loma without an ounce of discomfort.

Couldn't be happier to be back in the water surfing and when someone asks me where i'm going i'll sometimes respond 'Therapy'.

Here is a Preview of the best Monday news in a while for surfer or spectator

Tuesday the 24th we should see the third Pitcairn** swell come ashore with consistent head high sets around most south facing breaks, but the better sets coming in at times 1-2' overhead.

Wednesday the 25th should see a bit consistency with sets running 1-3' overhead. It's highly likely that standout south facing breaks could see occasional set waves approaching DOH* at times.

Friday the 27th looks a bit smaller, about head high with a few pluses now and again.

If you have kids that surf or are interested in learning more about surfing, wave height is best measured by using the body height of a 5 or 6 foot person.

*So, DOH stands for Double Over Head, or about twelve feet high on the cresting part of the wave. DOH is a big day of surf in San Diego, or anywhere else.

Salton Sea

I'd been wanting to see what the Salton Sea is like for a long time, So last December I stopped there on the way to Arizona.
I explored part of the Western Shore. This place is wild I really can't describe the feel of it. It is beautiful and so weird.

Partly abandoned and partly inhabited. Definitely a peaceful place. Vineyards..Date Palm Farms..Lots of 4-Wheel Trails, Dead Fish.

Desert Shores area on the westnorthwest side of the sea. In the 1950's Developers spent a lot of time building these Dubai-esque finger peninsulas with visions of luxury estates thriving on them, just a short ways away from the nearby towns and past marinas. Some of the fingers have a couple homes and some are completely empty. Check out the areal..

One thing I was thinking is that it would be neat to try out a waterfront house and use it for a weekend get away with friends or family because the Views are just incredible... Mountains with Snow, water, Desert make for a great Vista.

A Clean 4th of July

Friday July 2nd we were headed to our family get away. In the Eastern Sierras awaited our Rock Creek lakes cabin #8. As we drove past Mt. Whitney and other 14,000 foot peaks we all set our voice mails to let people know we would be un reachable for a few days. That felt pretty good, because soon enough the only way to escape from contact will be to turn the phone off.

I could share stories from the trip but what I'm going to do is talk about what was most fascinating.

Clean, Cold, Fresh water was liberally available, flowing from glaciers, through meadows and into lakes and down canyons. It was so plentiful and refreshing. Now I'm confused and jealous of the steams in the eastern sierras. We have snow, mountains,streams and canyons here in San Diego, but why can't we float down them and indulge in their pure and watery presence? Our rivers are stagnant, dirty, trashed and after rain you are not even supposed to swim anywhere because of the run off. This is a main reason why I joined Below The Surface an organization that encourages cities and individuals to enjoy water more by using it responsibly, all with the vision of cleaning up our rivers and oceans. Many of us aren't sure what the value of water is. I mean, its only worth a few cents, right? Thats not right and definitely not the right attitude.

This is why I have so much respect for Jared and Kristian, the founders of Below The Surface and why I am grateful to have the opportunity to help its mission. Think about how you are using water, and about your habits. Think about where the chemicals end up that your neighbors Mexican Gardening Professional is spraying on the soil and plants. I surfed with Dolphins, Garibaldi, and Seals this morning. We don't need this shit in the water, and neither do they. Even if you don't spend time in the ocean or in the rivers, I know you agree that Sea World shouldn't be the only safe shelter for marine animals. Please speak up and get ready to embrace cleaner water.

If you haven't heard of this term, then you aren't alone. Actually the first page of Google only knows it as an actual monkey, an alcoholic cocktail, the name of a band, etc.

The truth is that every single person has a Drunk Monkey voice. The Drunk Monkey is the part of our Mind that is responsible for our fundamental misconceptions. Many of its rules were written in our childhood and at that age, we completely misconceive situations. This is why we must learn about it and how to ignore it, Tell it to shut up. This is not easy, and I'm not saying i have mastered this because I haven't.

Every one needs to become aware of the Drunk Monkey in order to make better choices. Have you noticed yours recently? Perhaps it convinces you to stay safe, to goof off, to be catered for or to avoid taking a risk because you might be rejected or be laughed at. The drunk monkey even protects us from ourselves.

The drunk monkey will convince you to avoid pain more than it will for you to seek pleasure. What it sees as pain can be as simple as a confrontation with your boss or with a client. Have you noticed that the Drunk Monkey will convince you to avoid something that is critical to your well being? Since it takes extra effort to go running or to carry your toddler on your chest, your Drunk Monkey will tell you to watch TV or put your child in a stroller instead. LEARN TO SAY NO TO YOUR DRUNK MONKEY.

It knows that if you were to achieve ultimate success, whatever that is for you, then you would have to experience pain along the way.

I think the bottom line is to highlight the benefits of certain habits you want to happen more often in your life, so that you have strong associations with these positive habits.

Tell your drunk monkey that 'someday' never comes and that comfortable routines don't get you to where you need or want to be.

For my job, I talk to at least fifteen new people every day and when I'm not wearing slacks i also meet several new people every day. So many that whom I would love to connect with again so we can contribute to each other and talk about challenges and solutions. Unfortunately, an exchange of business cards does not normally spark such a beneficial interaction.

I enjoy connecting with others because they can help to provide the six basic human needs.

So, here I am. I need you to open up and tell me a story, teach me a lesson and also be open to sharing with others what I know is important.

This Journal will consist of ideas, facts, questions, and experiences that are all related to my interests,and more importantly the most critical challenges in our lives and American Society.

Even though I'm probably younger than you are, I know you will agree with me that there are more important things than the habits we have developed and what our society actually focuses on.
